How Long Does a House Clean Take? What 2, 3 or 4 Hours Covers

Published 29 October 2026 · 5 min read

Short answer

It depends on size, condition and what you ask for, so think in priorities rather than promises. Short visits suit kitchens, bathrooms and floors in a well-kept home; longer ones add dusting, extras and bigger homes. Two cleaners for three hours is six cleaner-hours.

It depends on the size of the home, its condition and what you want done, so think in priorities rather than promises. A short visit in a well-kept home usually focuses on the kitchen, bathroom and floors; longer visits add dusting, extras and bigger homes.

There is no official standard for how long a clean should take, and anyone who promises a whole house top to bottom in two hours is guessing. What follows are example plans with their assumptions spelled out, to help you book the right amount of time.

Minimum bookings

Many cleaners set a minimum visit length. One provider's October 2026 market estimate mentions a usual two-hour minimum, and another company advertises a two-to-three-hour minimum. So the real choice is usually between two, three or four hours, and how often.

Think in cleaner-hours

A quote for "three hours" can mean one cleaner for three hours or a team for three hours. Always count cleaner-hours:

BookingCleaner-hours
1 cleaner for 2 hours2
1 cleaner for 3 hours3
2 cleaners for 2 hours4
2 cleaners for 3 hours6

Two cleaners for three hours is six cleaner-hours of work, which is why team bookings for one-off cleans cost more even when the visit is shorter.

What each booking costs

These are advertised prices we checked in October 2026, not a national average. One provider's market estimate puts regular cleaning at €21 to €28 an hour in Dublin and €16 to €22 outside Dublin. At those rates, one cleaner costs:

Visit lengthDublinOutside Dublin
2 hours€42 to €56€32 to €44
3 hours€63 to €84€48 to €66
4 hours€84 to €112€64 to €88

Some companies charge more: another advertises €25 to €35 an hour. See our price guide and how much a cleaner costs in Ireland.

Example plans: what fits in 2, 3 or 4 hours

These assume one cleaner, regular visits, a home that is tidied beforehand, and no major built-up grime. They are planning examples, not industry standards. Your cleaner may suggest a different order.

Two hours: keep the essentials under control

Suits a smaller home, such as an apartment or a small house with one bathroom, cleaned every week or two.

  • Kitchen: counters, hob, sink, appliance fronts, quick wipe of the microwave
  • Bathroom: toilet, sink, shower or bath, mirror, floor
  • Hoover and mop the main floors
  • Empty bins
  • Quick dust of the main living area, if time allows

Three hours: the full routine

Suits a typical family home with two bathrooms, or a smaller home that wants dusting and a few extras each time.

  • Everything in the two-hour plan
  • Second bathroom or en suite
  • Dusting in the living room and bedrooms: surfaces, skirting, sills
  • Hoover all rooms, including stairs
  • Change beds, if you provide clean linen
  • One rotating extra, such as inside the microwave, glass doors or the fridge shelves

Four hours: larger homes or deeper regular cleans

Suits larger houses, homes with several bathrooms, or households who want regular extras done each visit.

  • Everything in the three-hour plan, across more rooms
  • Kitchen in more detail: cupboard fronts, splashback, extractor hood
  • Descaling taps and shower heads in hard-water areas
  • Two or three rotating extras each visit
  • Some ironing or laundry, if agreed

If you live in a hard-water area, limescale builds up faster on taps, showers and kettles, so descaling may need to become a regular task rather than an occasional one. Uisce Éireann has an Eircode checker for your supply.

What makes a clean take longer

  • The first visit. The cleaner is learning your home and dealing with built-up dirt. Consider a longer first visit or a deep clean before regular visits start.
  • Clutter. Every item on a counter has to be moved before it can be wiped. A quick tidy beforehand means more of the time goes on cleaning.
  • More bathrooms. Each extra bathroom adds noticeably to the job.
  • Pets. Hair on floors, sofas and stairs adds hoovering time.
  • Stairs and multiple floors. Carrying equipment up and down takes time.
  • Gaps between visits. Monthly visits have more to deal with than weekly ones. See how often you should get a cleaner.
  • Extras. Ovens, inside fridges, inside windows and ironing all take significant time. Many are better booked as separate jobs, such as oven cleaning.
  • Unfamiliar or missing equipment. A weak hoover or no mop slows everything down. See preparing for your first cleaner visit.

Deep cleans and end of tenancy cleans

These are a different kind of job. They are usually priced per job by bedroom count, and may involve a team rather than one cleaner. Advertised deep clean prices we checked in October 2026 start from €120 for one bedroom with one company, while another lists €240 for one bedroom, and the scope and extras differ. Ask any company how many cleaners and how many hours its price assumes, so you can compare quotes on cleaner-hours.

How much time a cleaner saves you

Irish figures on housework time are dated, but they give a sense of scale. In the 2005 National Time-Use Survey, adults in Ireland spent an average of 13.6 hours a week on housework, as reported by the ESRI. That covers more than cleaning, including cooking and other chores, so a cleaner replaces only part of it. Still, a three-hour visit can take a real chunk out of the week.

Getting the most from the time

  1. Put your tasks in priority order, so the important ones always get done.
  2. Rotate extras: one week the fridge, the next the skirting boards.
  3. Agree whether you are paying for time or for a task list.
  4. Review after a month. If the list never gets finished, either add time or trim the list.

Questions people ask

Why does my cleaner never finish everything on my list?

The list may simply be longer than the time booked. Put your tasks in priority order so the important ones always get done, and either add time or rotate the lower priorities from one visit to the next.

Is a first clean slower than later ones?

Usually, yes. The cleaner is learning your home and often tackling built-up grime. A longer first visit or a one-off deep clean can make later regular visits quicker.

Is it better to book two cleaners or one cleaner for longer?

Two cleaners finish sooner, which suits move-outs and one-off cleans. For regular visits, one cleaner for longer often works well because they learn your home. Compare quotes on total cleaner-hours.

How long does a deep clean or end of tenancy clean take?

These are usually priced per job rather than per hour, and take far longer than a regular visit. Ask the company how many cleaners it will send and for how long, so you can compare quotes.
